Westworld S1Ep7: Trompe L’Oeil Review/Recap

Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and William (Jimmi Simpson) have developed an attraction for one another while on their journey, and even though William tells her that he has a fiancé waiting for him at home, the two are unable to deny their feelings for each other. Lawrence (Cliffton Collins Jr.), William, and Dolores are forced to make a hasty get away when the train comes under attack by a group of outlaws, and later members of the Ghost Nation. Once a safe distance way, William and Dolores part ways with Lawrence has they continue their journey into No Man’s Land.

Maeve (Thandie Newton) continues to prove that she is a Host not to be messed with, and intentionally gets herself killed in order to be brought down to the facility. Her reason, to find out where they have taken Clementine. Meanwhile, Bernard and Ford are brought in to a meeting held by Theresa and Charlotte to express the concern of the Hosts behaviour. Putting Clementine (Angela Sarafyan) to the test, in her first physical altercation she is submissive to the abuse. But after they wipe her memory, and reenact the altercation, Clementine goes on the defence, and kills her attacker. And when Ashley (Luke Hemsworth) comes in to put her on freeze mode, Clementine refuses to respond, and advances on Ashley, which forces him to shoot her. Due to his failure to wipe the Hosts minds completely, and allowing them to retain faint memories from previous lives, and carry out grudges, Bernard is fired. All Hosts are forced to under go lobotomizes to wipe all previous memories. But when Maeve witness Clementine under the procedure, she demands that Sylvester and Felix help her escape, and if they don’t, she’ll kill them.
But the most interesting, and shocking moment to come out of tonight’s episode ie the truth about Bernard. After confronting Theresa about her being the one wiring out park information, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) brings her to the house Ford has kept secret, and to the Host family he has stored there. But when they search the house, Theresa (Sidse Babett Knudsen) points out a door that Bernard himself never noticed. On the other side of the door, Ford’s own secret lab where he has been creating his own Hosts. On the table are drawings of Hosts, and the most shocking, one of sketches is that of Bernard. But when asked about it, Bernard answers that the drawing has no meaning to him. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) finds the two, and reveals the truth. That the programming of the Hosts is what their creators make, and they are only allowed to see what their creators allow them to. And the same applies to Bernard, since he is one of Ford’s personal creations. Ford warned Theresa to stay out of his way, and now that she has gotten the Board involved in his business, he is forced to take forcible measures. With Bernard has his servant, Ford orders Bernard to kill Theresa, which he does by bashing her head against the wall.
