Ding dong the witch is dead. Shortly after raiding Kattegat Aslaug (Aylssa Sutherland) surrenders, and vows to leave without violence and to never return. All she asks is for safe passage to where ever the gods take her. But as she’s leaving, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) shoots her in the back with an arrow.
Ubbe and Sigurd return to Kattegat and learn about the death of their mother. But while Ubbe wants revenge, Sigurd doesn’t seem to heartbroken over her death, claiming he barely even knew her towards the end.
In Wessex Ivar, and Ragnar are taken prisoner until King Ecbert arrives. When he does, despite Ragnar being locked in a cage, and Ecbert mocking him with the key, it’s was almost like a reunion of old (hostile) friends. King Ecbert (Linus Roache) introduces Ragnar to his long lost son, Magnus, and informs him that Queen Kwenthrith is dead. And while Magnus is thrilled to finally meet his father, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) burst his bubble by telling him that he’s a miracle child because he (Ragnar) and Kwenthrith never even had sex. Ecbert claims he’s had his suspicions about the boy for a while, and now that the news is out, he feels no need to care for the boy and sends him away.
During their chat, Ragnar and Ecbert get into a debate over who loved Athelstan more, and who he would have been more safe with. But when it comes down to it, they move still feel tremendous guilt, both for letting him go, and for being the reason he’s dead. And after years of fighting, and with the amount of burden fallen upon him, Ragnar is tried, and asks Ecbert to kill him. And though the two have been enemies for years, Ecbert refuses, both because the two seem to have actually become (distant) friends, but also because Ragnar’s sons will seek revenge.
To ensure that he gets what he wants, and so Ecbert is safe from the wrath of his sons, Ragnar proposes that Ecbert contact King Aelle, and give him the ‘honor’ of killing Ragnar. With the death of Ragnar on Aelle’s hands, his sons will ignore Ecbert and focus all their attention on Aelle. Ecbert is hesitate at first, and actually seemed pained at the idea of turning Ragnar over to be killed.
